INTRODUCTION

St. Luke School k-8 Extension Program supports families by offering a safe and caring atmosphere for St. Luke School students before and after the school day. Under qualified supervision, we provide free-play time, directed activities, and supervised study time to foster creative abilities, learning skills, and social relationships.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the K-8 Extension Program is to provide safe, affordable, quality childcare for the families of our K-8th grade students. In doing so, we support families in their efforts to work and/or attend school. St. Luke K-8 Extension provides a safe place for children ages five to twelve years. We provide a safe, clean environment where children are encouraged to socialize with peers of different ages and create meaningful relationships as part of the St. Luke community. St. Luke K-8 Extension staff is committed to the families we serve, providing support and encouragement.

Extension Director

PHILOSOPHY

Our main goal is to help students have a place to finish homework, play, and get to know other students outside of their classroom by implementing creative activities, discussions, and socialization.  Many families will use Extension as a study hall where they know their child can get their work done, and also for play dates with other children.

While it is not our job to make students get their homework done it is our main focus so that parents have the opportunity to spend quality time with their students after working all day.  What it means is that the child is a participant, not just an observer, and is involved in a variety of different socialization activities.

CURRICULUM STATEMENT

While there is no formal curriculum as we are an after-school program we do try to pull education and curriculum into our activities in a fun and playful way.  Children should be learning something with the majority of the activities we do. Our goals encourage children to be enthusiastic, self-confident, independent learners and we believe that play is the primary mode of learning. Our Extension program also respects cultural differences and ever-changing interests. Through our interactions, we promote growth in all areas of development including:

social: to help children learn from adults and one another through observation, imitation, and interaction.

emotional: to provide a safe and secure environment where children can develop pride, self-confidence, independence, self-control, and a positive attitude toward life.

cognitive: to promote curiosity and to help children acquire learning skills, such as the ability to solve problems, make choices, ask questions, and express their ideas, observations, and feelings.

physical: to help children develop and enhance their small and large muscle skills and feel confident and comfortable with their own bodies.

Our K-8 Extension classroom goals are achieved through integrated, theme-based activities and conversations with adults and children. Opportunities also exist for the child to engage in one-on-one activities with the teacher, small group and large group activities, and solitary and independent play allowing for opportunities to experiment and explore. Whole group activities are for short periods of time and are suited to the age and ability of the children. Supervised free play and small groups predominate as a means of encouraging social interaction.
